Pediatric diagnostic services
Our Pediatric Audiology program offers the following diagnostic tools our Audiologists use to determine the presence, nature and degree of hearing loss.
Otoacoustic Emission (OAE) Testing
Newborn to adult
Quick, objective test to determine the function of the hearing system. Non-invasive; sedation is not needed.
Air and Bone Conduction Auditory Brainstem (ABR) Testing
Newborn to adult
Objective, non-invasive test to determine the function of the nerves that transmit hearing.
Tympanometry
Infant to adult
Quick, non-invasive test performed to check middle ear function.
Behavioral Observation Audiometry
Visually Reinforced Audiometry
Infant to toddlers
Hearing assessment using animated toys and noisemakers or visual reinforcement to condition a child to respond to sounds.
Conditioned Play Audiometry
Toddler to developmental age 4
Hearing assessment using play to evaluate hearing under headphones. Provides ear specific information.
Central Auditory Processing
Developmental age 6 to adult
Used when a child has normal hearing but doesn't seem to understand or follow directions appropriately. Will assess a child's ability to concentrate on auditory tasks in different situations, including environments with background noise. We can also perform an evaluation to help differentiate between CAPD and ADD/ADHD.
Traditional Audiometry
Developmental age 4 to adult
Testing will assess the ability to subjectively hear and understand. Results provide information on type and degree of hearing loss.
Sonus Audiologists will closely coordinate any rehabilitation efforts with educational, social and medical facilities with the sensitivity needed to ensure the best possible treatment.
